At the age of 18, during his final year of secondary school, Giacomo had a great passion for horse riding. Following a fall, he suffered a fractured femur; admitted to the Rizzoli Hospital in Bologna, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the right leg.
After several rounds of chemotherapy and new recurrences, he had to face the amputation of the leg. Having come through the operation, he returned to sport — no longer through horse riding, but through rowing — joining the Italian Paralympic national team in 2017.
In December 2019 he was awarded the title of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He recounted his story — his illness and his rebirth through rowing — in the book La notte ha smesso di far paura.
With his sporting and human journey, Giacomo Perini supports piùblu’s mission and contributes to its awareness-raising activities for the protection of marine, lake and river ecosystems.
His presence as ambassador reinforces piùblu’s commitment to promoting an environmental culture founded on responsibility, participation and care for our waters.
