Giuseppe La Spada

United with our mission to protect the environment and our waters.

A multimedia artist inspired by nature and sound.

Giuseppe La Spada is a multidisciplinary artist whose research explores the relationship between humanity and nature, with the aim of raising public awareness of environmental issues.

In particular, the element of water runs throughout his entire artistic practice, becoming on each occasion the subject or the context — sometimes even the medium. Always interested in synaesthetic experiences arising from the interaction between artistic languages, he now focuses on photography, video and installations — three-dimensional and/or interactive.

For him, art should be functional and develop into a “social architecture”; for this reason his practice also includes conferences and participatory projects aimed at younger generations, in order to foster a new ecological awareness.

FLUCTUS kuro Chapter by Giuseppe La Spada

«They told her she was beautiful and transparent, like the sea. So, one day, she dove in, to become one with it. Today, in certain places, the two are indistinguishable. May this nightmare end, and may she return to where she came from.»

Giuseppe La Spada’s vision of plastic

A life dedicated to beauty.

In 2007, the year he won the prestigious Webby People’s Voice Winner — Web NetArt (the Oscars of the Internet) for a project related to ecology, his research took on the objective of raising collective awareness of environmental issues.
In 2009, Afleur was included among the works of Digitalife 2 alongside those of Marina Abramović, Christian Marclay and others; the event’s image was by La Spada himself.
In October 2015 he presented Sublimis at the Triennale in Milan — an exhibition on the human-water relationship; Ryuichi Sakamoto supported the project with the unreleased composition Shizen no Koe.
In 2018 he participated in “Re Use. Scarti, oggetti, ecologia nell’arte contemporanea” alongside works by Man Ray, Duchamp, Burri, Hirst etc. In 2019 he exhibited the project Traiettorie Liquide with photographs of world ski champion Federica Brignone. That same year he directed the video for Franco Battiato’s Torneremo ancora.
In 2020 he conceived Essere Ecosofia for the Fondazione Creval — a digital platform hosting artworks and educational tools aimed at creating a new ecology of thought and a new sustainable balance.
In 2022, with his field recording from Mount Etna, he collaborated on the sound installation Playback curated by Ryuichi Sakamoto for the collective Dumb Type — an installation present both at the Japan Pavilion of the 59th Venice Biennale and at the Haus der Kunst museum in Munich.
Art Director of the Global Network of Water Museums (UNESCO-IHP).
In 2024 he held solo exhibitions at the Palazzo della Cultura in Catania and the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade, as well as an installation in Indonesia at the World Water Forum, realised with the Global Network of Water Museums (UNESCO-IHP).
Member of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (New York).
He taught at the Accademia di Brera from 2010 to 2019 and at IED Milan from 2014 to 2022.

Federica Brignone.
Italy’s most successful skier of all time

Federica, born in 1990, is the most successful all-round Italian champion of all time. The first Italian skier to win the overall World Cup. Her impressive record includes:
4 World Cup titles, including one overall — the only one in Italy — and three in different disciplines
3 Olympic medals
3 World Championship medals
Record of 69 World Cup podiums, including 27 victories

Attentive to environmental issues from childhood, in 2017 she launched her sustainability project Traiettorie Liquide (www.traiettorieliquide.it) together with Giuseppe La Spada and Giulia and Daniela Mancini, to raise public awareness of issues related to environmental protection — from the melting of glaciers to water pollution, through to the fight against deforestation — underlining the importance of using natural and sustainable resources towards the decarbonisation of consumption.
