WE CAN BLU IT! 2026

WE CAN BLU IT! 2026 25–27 September 2026: a new mobilisation for the protection of our waters

wecanbluit2026

The 2026 edition centres on the Tiber. The river will be at the heart of a programme bringing together schools, citizens, associations, sports clubs, institutions and local organisations — shining a light on a waterway that is fundamental to Rome’s identity and an ecosystem that demands continuity, presence and care. The stretch between Ponte Milvio and the Tiber Island will become a place where environmental action, education and public participation converge — a programme that also reaches beyond Rome to Ostia, tracing the journey of the river to the sea.

Friday 25 September opens with schools at its centre: clean-ups in Rome and Ostia, sustainability workshops and a conference bringing together scientists and institutions to examine the state of aquatic ecosystems and the impact of plastic pollution.

Saturday 26 September takes the work to the riverbanks — clean-ups open to citizens and associations, with particular focus on river access points. Central to the day is “Adopt a River Access”: a programme inviting neighbourhood associations, clubs, scout groups, sports organisations and volunteers to take responsibility for defined stretches of the lungotevere. Each group will clean, report problems and document what they find — mapping the relationship between urban life, neglect and the possibility of recovery. The work goes beyond picking up litter. It includes advance mapping with the Municipality and local councils; clearing of access points and quaysides; reporting of illegal dumping, safety issues and deterioration; cataloguing of collected materials; and the identification of water quality and microplastics observation points. Everything will feed into a final environmental report, made available to the public.

Sunday 27 September maintains the connection between Rome and Ostia — the point where the Tiber meets the sea, and where the challenges of the river environment meet those of the coastline. A reminder that the care of one cannot be separated from the care of the other.

WE CAN BLU IT! As in previous years, WE CAN BLU IT! will extend across Italy. Over the same weekend, rowing, canoe and kayak clubs nationwide will take part in clean-up and awareness activities in the waterways where they train, compete and belong.

WE CAN BLU IT! 2026 consolidates the path initiated by piùblu ets in protecting aquatic ecosystems, defining an intervention model based on continuity, public responsibility, and collaboration between institutions, associations, local communities, and the sports world. Waste collection, area remediation, reporting of critical issues, and environmental monitoring become part of a broader effort: restoring water spaces to a recognizable presence in local life and making their care a shared, documented, and ongoing commitment.
