On the occasion of World Rivers Day 2024, the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research — ISPRA — published the report “Floating macro-waste in rivers: ISPRA’s national monitoring programme for the Marine Strategy,” produced as part of the Operational Agreement for Marine Strategy monitoring programmes between MASE and ISPRA, in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Foundation.
To investigate the dynamics of waste in rivers, ISPRA deployed floating containers in waterways — “Sentinels” equipped with GPS systems designed to simulate the behaviour of macro-waste.
The study shows that the Tiber, Sarno and Po are the rivers that carry the most floating macro-waste to the sea. Of this waste, more than 80% is plastic, and a third of that is single-use.
