More than 80% of goods traded worldwide travel by sea. All these cargoes travel on ever-larger ships — cargo vessels now longer than three football pitches, with cranes needed to lift containers and stack them in towering columns.
In the last 15 years, more than 20,000 containers have fallen into the sea. Their varied contents have washed up on coastlines, poisoning fish and ecosystems and contributing to the vast quantities of waste found in the world’s oceans. Most containers sink to the seabed — structures that will never be recovered. But ships, in rough seas, can lose one or many containers at a time. Ma le navi, in caso di mari agitati, possono perderne uno solo o moltissimi in una sola volta.
