A lifelong passion for nature and sharks led her to a degree in natural environmental sciences and a degree in marine sciences. During her university years she began her first collaborations, starting from the seas of Sardinia before reaching the ocean — which, she says, everyone in their own professional journey can help to preserve.

Valentina is twenty-eight years old, from Treviso, and says she has always had “a tremendous passion for nature.” The animals that fascinated her most as a child were sharks — enough to call herself “a little nerd, let’s put it that way.” A degree in natural environmental sciences and a degree in marine sciences then made her an oceanographer. “At first I thought I would become a nutritional biologist, then I realised I really had to follow my passion,” Lovat recounts, “even though in Italy it is very difficult to find work in this sector. But in the end, passion won.” It was during university that her first collaborations began. She took part in a research and conservation project on a species of dolphin, the bottlenose, in Sardinia. Her mission: to make people understand how fundamental that blue cosmos is to everyone’s daily life — “We all need to commit more to understanding the importance of the ocean in our lives and how each of us, in our own professional journey, can contribute to preserving it, even if we live in Rome or Milan.”
