As is well known, plastic waste management is one of the great environmental challenges of our time. It is a material that takes an extremely long time to break down, and finding innovative ways to recycle it would allow us to resolve the problem at least in part.
Among the most widespread plastics are polyethylene and polypropylene. A group of American researchers has developed a new method for recycling these two types of plastic by converting them — at least in part — into soap that can be used for washing hands and dishes.
Now, the authors conclude, the challenge will be to convert the process to industrial standards. A step that, they stress, will require the investment of considerable funds and resources.
