The devastating reality of plastic pollution has been powerfully highlighted by Australian photographer Justin Gilligan, winner in the “Oceans: The Bigger Picture” category at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

The photograph depicts a grim mosaic composed of more than 400 pieces of plastic recovered from the stomach of a single flesh-footed shearwater found dead on the beaches of Lord Howe Island — a small, remote island in the Pacific Ocean situated between Australia and New Zealand. The image reminds us how devastating plastic pollution is for living creatures, with particular reference to its impact on ocean ecosystems.
